They established the city of Castro and pacified its residents, the Cuncos. From its establishment on February 12, 1576, until 1767, Castro served as the administrative center of Chiloé Island. In 1594, Castro had a population of 8,000, most of whom were farmers. The town was raided by Dutch pirates several times up until the mid-17th century.
