Castro is a city and municipality located on Chiloé Island in Chile. It serves as the capital of the Chiloé Province in the Los Lagos Region. The city is situated on the Estero de Castro on the eastern coast of central Chiloé Island. This location gives Castro easy access to the eastern islands of the Chiloé Archipelago as well as to the open ocean via Cucao and Huillinco to the west. Castro holds the distinction of being the third oldest city in Chile that has been continuously inhabited. In 1567, Rodrigo de Quiroga, who was then the temporary governor of Chile, initiated a campaign led by his son-in-law, Captain Martín Ruiz de Gamboa, to conquer Chiloé Island. They established the city of Castro and pacified its residents, the Cuncos. From its establishment on February 12, 1576, until 1767, Castro served as the administrative center of Chiloé Island. In 1594, Castro had a population of 8,000, most of whom were farmers. The town was raided by Dutch pirates several times up until the mid-17th century.
