Nuku Hiva or Marchand Island 12 ( French : île Nuku Hiva 344 or île Marchand ) 56 is the largest of the Marquesas Islands , in French Polynesia . It is located in the northern group of the archipelago.
About 15 kilometers southwest of Taiohae is the Hakaui Valley, with several ceremonial houses and platforms and the 350-meter Ahuii Waterfall (also called Vaipo Waterfall). Other important places of worship, some of them restored, are located in the south of the island, in the Taipivai Valley, and in the north, near Hatiheu Bay, the favorite place of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands on a 300-meter-high craggy basalt cone above the bay.
Nuku Hiva is the setting for Herman Melville 's novel Taipi
The rocky coast of the island is an ideal place for underwater exploration. The absence of a coral reef favors the abundant presence of pelagic fauna such as: melon-headed whales, hammerhead sharks, white tip sharks, rays, leopard and rays. Not far from Taiohae, in the Ekamako cave, there is a large colony of rays and lobsters. Hundreds of melon-headed whales can be seen in Controller Bay.
