The cosmopolitan capital city of Colombia, Bogotá, home to approximately 8 million people, is situated at an elevation of roughly 2640 m in the Andean Highlights. This results in a perpetual spring-like climate. Bogotá is not just a starting point for travel throughout the country, but also a fascinating city to discover. It boasts an appealing old district, La Candelaria, a blend of old and new with stunning old colonial buildings and palaces, bohemian cafés, art galleries and theatres, and some excellent examples of modern, futuristic architecture. Bogotá provides visitors with everything a modern city can offer, including a vibrant and diverse cultural life. El Centro is packed with shops, offices, cafés and a financial district. Day trips from Bogotá include a journey to Zipaquirá, where you can see the impressive underground cathedral constructed from a salt mine.
