1. Lima
Stay
About the destination: Lima is the capital of Peru and its largest city. Most people simply use Lima as a gateway to Cuzco, Arequipa or Amazonas, but Lima, known as the City of the Kings, has a lot to offer visitors. It's a city with many interesting historical sites, monumental colonial architecture and old world charm. Plaza Mayor or Plaza de Armas is at the heart of the Historic Centre of Lima. It's surrounded by some of the main tourist attractions in Lima, the Cathedral, the Archbishop Palace and the Government Palace. In the centre of the square there's a fountain with a bronze statue. Jirón de la Unión is the pedestrian street that links the Plaza de Armas and the Plaza San Martín. It used to be a very important street where Aristocrats lived, these days it's primarily a shopping street, but you can find many beautiful colonial buildings with wooden balconies and ornate grilled windows as you stroll along. Lima is a city connected to the ocean. The Costera promenade runs along its coast and is home to numerous restaurants and cafes. Lima is also the best place to sample the wonderful Peruvian cuisine, which has a huge variety of ingredients from the coast, mountain and Amazon regions. Lima is big and chaotic, but with its beautiful sights, great food and friendly people it's well worth a visit.

About the destination: The cosmopolitan capital city of Colombia, Bogotá, home to approximately 8 million people, is situated at an elevation of roughly 2640 m in the Andean Highlights. This results in a perpetual spring-like climate. Bogotá is not just a starting point for travel throughout the country, but also a fascinating city to discover. It boasts an appealing old district, La Candelaria, a blend of old and new with stunning old colonial buildings and palaces, bohemian cafés, art galleries and theatres, and some excellent examples of modern, futuristic architecture. The city is renowned for its collection of pre-Columbian gold art, magnificent colonial churches, and top-notch museums such as the outstanding Museo del Oro, considered one of South America's finest museums. Bogotá provides visitors with everything a modern city can offer, including a vibrant and diverse cultural life. El Centro is packed with shops, offices, cafés and a financial district. The majority of the best hotels, restaurants, cafés, boutiques and nightclubs are located in Zona Norte. Day trips from Bogotá include a journey to Zipaquirá, where you can see the impressive underground cathedral constructed from a salt mine. Another interesting place to visit is Monserrate, which offers fantastic views over the city.
