Guadalajara is the capital city of the central state of Jalisco in Mexico. It's also the second largest city in the country and is considered a colonial city, although much of its architecture is from the independence period. The city is renowned as the birthplace of the famous Mariachis, and it is the ideal location to discover some of the finest traditional Mexican handmade items. The town of Tequila is just a short distance away, and is a must-see when visiting Guadalajara, to sample and learn about the globally renowned Mexican drink, Tequila. One of Guadalajara's greatest artistic treasures are the impressive frescos by José Clemente Orozco, located in the Palacio de Gobierno, the Instituto de Cabanas, and inside the Cathedral. The Cathedral, one of Guadalajara's main symbols, is a striking blend of architectural styles, with the lower parts dating back to as early as 1571. There is a spacious plaza area in front of it, perfect for resting. Often referred to as the pearl of the west, Guadalajara is a large and captivating city with a beautiful and intriguing contrast of the historic and the modern.
