Sukhothai Thailand

Sukhothai is a small city in the Lower Northern region of Thailand, best known for the ruins of the ancient city of Sukhothai. The name translates to "the dawn of happiness". The province is situated on the lower border of the northern region, 427 km north of Bangkok. This ancient city, which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, has been transformed into a historical park where some of its structures, previously hidden under dense vegetation, have been restored or reconstructed. At the core of the park, the royal city, encircled by three concentric walls, houses the main monuments, such as the Wat Mahatat, which is located in the center of the city in line with Brahminical cosmogony. According to an inscription, Wat Mahatat was established in the early years of the kingdom, around 1240, and expanded during subsequent reigns. Wat Mahatat was reserved for the religious practices of the royal family. Wat Sa Sri presents a charming image, with its graceful proportions and stunning location reflecting the aesthetic values of the original constructors.
