About the destination: In addition to being the youngest town in Patagonia, El Chaltén is a dreamy location filled with cultural diversity. A large number of foreigners visit this place due to its perfect natural conditions for outdoor activity enthusiasts, particularly hikers. The most recent national census has determined that there are over a thousand permanent residents, but this number significantly increases from November through May due to the influx of visitors who come to enjoy the summer months. It is located 212 kilometers from El Calafate, a distance that can be covered in less than 3 hours, thanks to the excellent condition of the new road. During this journey, visitors will pass by several picturesque sites. The environment around El Chaltén blends the enchantment of nearby glaciers, hidden ponds, the azure Lake Viedma, and the mystical presence of Mount Fitz Roy. From the village, visitors can spot its imposing, unmistakable peak, which is almost always shrouded by a cloud that the Tehuelche people mistook for smoke, a misunderstanding that led to the indigenous name of the mountain: "chaltén", which means "volcano" or "smoking mountain".
