The Ancona province is located in the Marche region of central Italy. The capital city is Ancona, which is also the capital of the Marche region. The province is bordered by the Adriatic Sea and shares its borders with the Apennine Mountains to the west. The majority of the province's population resides in the coastal areas and in the capital city of Ancona, which has a population of 101,518. As of 2015, the total population of the province was 477,892. The province's coastal location makes it strategically important. The current president of the province is Liana Serrani. The province is known for its sandy beaches, which are popular among Italians but have not been heavily impacted by tourism. A significant portion of the province's land is used for farming, particularly for wine production. The province is known for producing wines from the Montepulciano, Sangiovese, and Verdicchio grape varieties. Every year, the province hosts feasts during the harvest season. The province also includes mountainous regions and the Conero Regional Park, which is home to dense forests where black truffles are found. These truffles are sold in Acqualagna, located in the neighboring province of Pesaro e Urbino. Notable individuals born in the Ancona province include Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor (from Jesi); International Gothic painter Gentile da Fabriano (from Fabriano); writer Rafael Sabatini (from Jesi); composer Gaspare Spontini (from Maiolati, which has since been renamed Maiolati Spontini in his honor); composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (from Jesi); mathematician and physicist Vito Volterra (from Ancona); footballer Roberto Mancini (from Jesi); Pope Leo XII (from Genga); Pope Pius IX (from Senigallia); and actress Virna Lisi (from Jesi).
