Springfield is the capital of the state of Illinois and also serves as the administrative hub of Sangamon County. The city was established in 1819, became an administrative center in 1823, and was granted its charter in 1840. It was designated as the capital of Illinois in 1837. The legislative assembly convened here for the first time in 1839. As per the 2010 census, the city is home to 111,454 residents. Initially, around 1810, the city was named Calhoun, in honor of South Carolina Senator John C. Calhoun. However, after the population became disillusioned with Calhoun, the city was renamed Springfield. Abraham Lincoln, one of the city's most notable residents, moved to the area in 1831, but did not reside in the city itself until 1837. U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant also had connections to Springfield.
