The island is especially known as the home of the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard on Earth, which is named after the island. Komodo Island has a land area of 390 square kilometers and a human population of over two thousand. The island's inhabitants are descendants of former convicts who were banished to the island and have intermingled with the Bugis from Sulawesi. The majority of the people practice Islam, but there are also Christian and Hindu communities. Komodo is part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands and is included in the Komodo National Park.
